Welcome to the School Counselor's webpage!
As school counselors, we follow the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) model. That means we work with all students through a variety of activities that include classroom guidance lessons, topical small "lunch bunch" groups, short term individual counseling to assist students achieve and accomplish their best within the school environment.

Our Program
Peer Tutoring
In 2023-2024 we are having peer tutoring. Tutors are recommended by the classroom teachers (3rd-5th). If chosen the student will help out the K-2nd classrooms that ask for a tutor for one day a week.
Bullying Prevention
October is National Bully Prevention Month but ...
we talk about it throughout the entire school year. During the month of October, we have focused our classroom guidance lessons on bullying, specifically:
-
what it is: bullying is defined as harmful/hurtful acts that are R.I.P: repeated, intentional and power based.
-
who it affects: bullying includes a person who is bullying, a target (the person being bullied) and bystanders. Bystanders are the people who see it happen and have an opportunity to help.
-
what we should do if we are bullied or see someone else being bullied. Students are taught that one time incidents could be mistakes from which the person learns and understands not to do that behavior again. Repeated events should not be ignored. When that happens, we should use our words and tell the person to stop, tell an adult, and remain in a safe area with a safe group of people.
Bully Prevention cont.
Some of the stories that we have used to discuss bullying with our students are: The Recess Queen, Bully Beans, Thank You Mr. Falker, Bullies Are a Pain in the Brain. Bullying related topics that we also discuss throughout the year are personal space, tattling vs telling, resolving conflict, and managing anger.
As our students move through the grades, more technology is available to them. As a result, we found it important to make them aware of the importance of being a good digital citizen, which includes appropriate, inappropriate, and safe online behavior via computers, gaming systems, and mobile devices. A helpful website, for both schools and parents, is Common Sense Media, https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/digital-citizenship.
Pennies for Paulding

Pennies for Paulding supports Paulding for Christmas, a non-profit organization that provides new toys at Christmas for over 1000 Paulding County children. Each elementary school is placed in a category for competition based on student enrollment. In 2023 BHES was recognized as 1st place in our school category. Thank you for encouraging generosity among students! Go Wolfpups!
Career Clusters
In an effort to expose our students to the world of work, from 1st-5th grade, they receive information on 3 or 4 different career clusters. By the time they transition to middle school, they will have been exposed to all 17 career clusters. Throughout the year, our 5th graders will complete an interest inventory, research a specific career, write a paper and give a presentation to their classmates on what they learned.
Holiday Assistance
Holiday Assistance: Hope for Christmas is the event sponsored by Paulding Christmas that provides gifts, food and event fun to families of Paulding County. Registration for this event closes in mid November. To register or to donate, or serve at the events, please go to www.hopeforchristmas.com.
Additionally, our school community provides holiday gifts and food for families in need. Your child's classroom teacher communicates the families' gift ideas and sizes. These new clothing/toy donations need to be dropped off at the school with the family number/letter attached to the item. Thank you again for making the holidays extra special for our students. Letters and information will be made available closer to the holiday.
Speak Up Be Safe
Each year, as part of the PCSD guidance curriculum, we provide a safety lesson on child abuse for K through 5th grade students. A letter will come home with information about these lessons, in addition to a passive parent permission form. Passive permission means that if you give permission for your child to participate in the activity, you do not need to send it it. Visit https://www.childhelp.org/subs/childhelp-speak-up-be-safe/ for more information.
Kindness Challenge
During the month of February & March, families can work together to encourage their children to do kind things for others. If you child chooses to complete the challenge, they may turn their signed sheets for PBIS point. Ideas are listed at the Great Kindness Challenge link: https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/
